What Oil do You Use?

Mobil1 V-Twin 20W50. $10 at Walmart.
I have used this in the Harley. Worked pretty well for a good 40K miles or so, but on a trip out west a couple years ago I started hearing lots of valve-train noise after a day where I ran a hundred miles or so at 80mph in 100+ degree heat in Utah. Switched back to dino oil upon return, which (fortunately) quieted the ol' Twinkie down. If I'm going into the heat with that bike again, I really need to add an oil cooler. Also ran it for most of the 20K I owned a GS. Worked fine, and if I ever needed to top-off, Walmart* was a lot easier to find than a BMW shop! Best price I found for the stuff was at Farm & Fleet, though of late I've been getting so many discount/sale emails from Advance Auto that they've been the cheapest source.

I didn't use Mobil 1 in the Himalayan because the label didn't explicitly say it complied with the JASO standard in the Himma's manual. I'm pretty sure the API rating is equivalent, but the bike was under warranty at the time and Valvoline's full syn was the same price and said "JASO" on the label. Thus works the market...

Got to love it! Everything I see people saying, everyone's taking care of their cycles. Kudos to all of us. I'm another one who will be doing an early oil change as I have to go from the Gulf Coast up to Minnesota then to Wisconsin and back home. Little over 3000 miles. Happens next week and the following week on my way... Weather pending

When I bought the bike (used) with 8700kms, they threw in a service but are unable to tell me which oil they used. I have to assume it was semi-synthetic. It was filled to way over the lines in the spyglass and hasn't dropped down at all after 4000kms in six months and fills the entire glass.
I bought one litre of this Shell oil in case of top-ups, but haven't needed to use it.

I have a long trip of about 4000kms coming up in a couple of weeks and although RE state 10,000kms interval, I'm pondering an oil and filter change.

I run Mobil 1 15w-50 full synthetic (automotive). Not enough miles to suggest it to others, but it keeps my 1990 Vanagon and 92 Ranger going strong. No clutch issues so far. Honestly I run it more for the simplicity as well as cost savings over Motul. For me Mobil 1 checks the boxes and I buy it in bulk since my vehicles use it too.

Mobil 1 V twin 20/50 has a MA2 rating and has a SN rating as well as the SG/SH rating on the can.
Not hard to find , there are a few V twins around!
Bikes with wet clutches don't like friction modified oils, but FM oils are normally thinner too, so most 15 or 20 /50 oils are going the be OK as few , if any, are friction modified
Some types of starter clutch don't like synth, even MA2 , and they will slip before the main clutch, mainly Handa ones!
And there is a RE tech bulletin approving 20/50 oils in lieu of 15/50.

Thanks Roy. Many years ago I replaced a Honda CB250 clutch for that reason. The 15W-50 I run should be fine. Not worried about the lack of ratings and I change it every 2k so not stressed about it breaking down too soon. If I were in a warmer climate I’d run the 20W-50. But here in cool SF, I getter better starts with the 15.

I should have said it meets MA2 standards, if you read the label it does say it is suitable for transmissions and wet clutches, which it wouldn't do without meeting them.
