Light weight top box

I know about the weak top rack on the Himalayan but I was looking at the Shad 29L that weighs 7 pounds. That falls under the 7.5 pound max weight of the factory top rack. The reason I was looking at a top box is that I’m getting tired of carrying my helmet into stores. I own a Shoei helmet and their $200 transition shield, so I won’t be locking my helmet to my bike. I will only use the top box to store my helmet when the bike is parked. Do you think the 7 pound box will cause a problem with the rack breaking if it’s at the upper range of the weight limit?

The rack will support more than seven pounds..if the bikes not moving. My suggestion is beef up the rack like 'ol what's his name does or add bracing that ties into the pannier system.

Beef up the rack or fit a stronger one. Some day. you WILL stop off to do some shopping on the way home and, having this big box on the back, you'll put it in the top box. Better not to have the worry.

I also run a pin-lock Shoei helmet with transition shield. It sounds like all you need is to install is a $10 to $12 dollar helmet lock on your bike. I’ve been locking my helmet on the bike for three years no with no worries.

My only worry with them is some dropkick cutting the strap. Sure, it makes the helmet useless, but we're dealing with brain cells here.
That is always possible. But let’s face it if they really want it they are going to steal it no mater where it’s on the bike or in a locked top box!

I have a Shad 33 permanently on my bike with some raingear and it also serves to hold my helmet whenever I park the bike. Been there for almost two years now, no signs of the rack falling of. Could be different tomorrow, don' t give any warranty.

Just front up for Hitchcocks reinforced rack, if you want something that looks right and works.
It is possible to get a bit bracing in, either to the the plates at the seat lock area or to the muffler mount.
There have been changes since most failures were recorded early in the model life, so maybe the problem is no longer as bad-----?
The cheap reinforced racks on fleabay will break PDQ, DAHIK! ,
Tube too thin and crap stick welding,

I have a Givi Trekker Outback 58L on mine and I would say it is definetly over that weight limit but haven't had an issue yet. They make a smaller one as well that fits a single helmet instead of a double like mine. The mounting plate weighed a ton but it adds a little bit of extra support bolting to bike where the tail light is. Its a pretty expensive top box and mount in my opinion but I like being able to store my helmet and jacket inside without worry. I don't care much for the look of a topbox but it sure is handy to have. I would think you would be ok with the weight of the box you're thinking about.

Being able to lock a helmet, Garmin GPS, GoPro and gloves when parked is something I’ve also been thinking about . Where I live is ok but when I travel to places I don’t know I’d rather be safe than sorry.
Tossing up between the
Givi trekker 46L,
Givi trekker outback 42L, and the
Givi trekker Dolomiti 46L.
I quite like the Dolomiti 30 but won’t fit a helmet. Givi boxes seem best value for money.
Low weight is a big criterion.
Any one with experience on any of these?

I wouldnt ignore the low priced knock off Givis on Fleabay or sometimes from Third Gear- there is very little difference when you put them side by side.
A36 L will usually take a large helmet.
Vibration can be just as big a problem as overloading, depending on where you ride, which is why some like to brace them.
I have a unused Shad SH40 box which the PO flung in with the bike that I don't want a lot for but postage might be a killer.
Have a look at one and let me know if you are interested and I will get a quote for postage
Also have a secondhand but unmarked Hepco and Bekker 40 ish L equivalent of the Givi trekker, but these type of boxes are heavy and will require a braced rack,
Will also be a lot less than a new trekker!

Thanks Roy, I’ll check the Shad details online.
Can you post a picture & if possible model number, dimensions and weight the H & B case and I’ll try to locate info online.
Cheers

I saw a few videos on the reinforce Givi rack and some people had to cut off part of their rear rack to make it fit. I guess the rear light or rack dimensions changed in 19-20?

Yes a top box would hide the tail light and possibly indicators.
However if you have the RE supplied pannier rack it comes with a relocation bracket for the tail light it moves out 7.5 cm (3”) in addition to the indicators moving back onto the cross over box plate of the pannier rack.
There is one YT video by Dangar wheels where the Givi universal mount fits perfectly. He has a trekker outback 42 l topbox.

Hi Roy, apologies for not replying earlier.
I had given a mate a Givi 30L monolock case I was not using some years ago. He just returned it and said he never used it either.
I need to check if it can be mounted and how it works out for me.
Currently under lock down, and from tonight we cant even go 5km from home
cheers,
Pete

Fine, if the Givi doesnt workout I would like $80- for the Shad and $100- for the H&B , plus postage / Sendle costs.
No lock down in SA, for now!
Oh thanks for jinxing us
I've got a week's holiday and, seeing I'm finally getting my bike back on the road (I flamin' hope, it's not there yet), it'd be nice to do some riding.
