Handguards

I'm looking into getting some handguards, mainly to keep the brunt of the wind off my hands in colder weather. Ideally I'd like to keep the bar ends as well and would like something that will fit around them. Currently looking at Barkbusters Storm. Just wondering what others are using. Pictures would be very helpful if you have any too.

Fitted easily, without hacking or filing. Still got the bar-end weights. Cheap and strong; one did bend when I dropped the beast but bent back ok with a couple of Stillsons. Any colour you like as long as it's black.

I have the bark busters with vps covers. I have the RE aluminum bars and needed to raise them 7/8 inch to clear the dash at how I have everything adjusted for me. I got their barbed weights cause I could make them work with the aluminum bar weights. But if you still have the steel bars and weights they will work with them.
I’ve had 6 or so drops with them and just scuffs on the plastic and bar end.

- For the RE hand guards, pretty much guarantee these will be a disaster in a crash. First we hear of it will be pics of some poor dudes hands being torn to bits when they fell apart the second they touched the ground. Was told they are cast, big no no.

- For the cheap Amazon ones; meh. They're overly large in my opinion and maybe in a stock RE form they fit ok but I had a hell of a time getting mine to work, locations were fine but angles were not. I agree the metal strap is fine but they made the bolt/flair set out of the lowest possible grade aluminum they could, drop the bike it's going to bend and you're gonna have a hell of a time fixing it. Might not strand you but if you shear the bolt or threads you're not going to have fun getting the parts out. If I remember correctly the long bold needs to be changed to fit the bard ends anyway.

I'll be replacing mine with the bark busters.

My Barkbuster Storms stood up well to the four drops my bike had, did not bend, only some scratches. However they are expensive.
Only 4 drops, your doing much better then me. I’m starting to think I’m not a very good rider, one of my falls the barkbuster twisted down but didn’t bend or anything, I just loosened the bolts moved it up and tightened them back down. Expensive they are but seem reasonably stout.

We're having some pretty cold temperatures here in the morning, 0C/32F to -3C/26F and I find the Barkbuster Storms keeps the top of my hand warm but my fingers freeze. The Storms are nice and high at the top but the bottoms wrap pretty much around the metal bar with little protection for the fingers. Can't adjust the RH one down as it fouls with the brake. Someone suggested turning them around (upside down) but then there is pretty much no protection for the top of the hands. Tried that this morning on my commute - no good..
Anyone with suggestions/photos? Might have to go with different plastic guards for the Barkbusters. MrDralas - how do you find the VPS guards? How much protection do they give under the aliminium bar of the Barkbusters?

I only got the guards after the winter was over, so I’m not sure how they are in the cold, below Freezing I found my summer gloves terrible but my rain gloves where more tolerable. I have my bars and levels adjusted differently then every one else I think, of you look at my photos I have every thing tipped down a little further then everyone’ else’s.
I’ve since moved the second vps plastic to the upper position, but my bike still needs a chain so it’s been sitting.
The way I have them set they seemed to protect hands ok from the rain. The vps look like they have spots to screw plastic bits to the bottom to extend them further down I just haven’t seen any Listings for the plastic.

Not sure if these help explain at all

Looking to fit some handguards on my Himi. Problem is I have Renthall bars fitted. Most of the ones I have looked at will foul the screen when on full lock. Also don't want to pay through the nose for a pair. Any suggestions would be gratefully received. C.heers

Just trim the screen .
If you only want weather protection the one piece VPS Barkbusters fit to the bars between the mirror perch and the switch blocks and with the extra wind shields work well.

My only concern with the fully enclosed units is the fear of losing my grip on particularly nasty terrain and not being able to successfully regain control quickly....apart from that minor concern, they do look quite impressive.

The Barkbuster Blizzards combined with winter gloves and "merino" silks (undergloves)....prove to be effective in the milder winters in my location, but doubt they would prove effective in the more extreme seasons you guys endure.

they are like socks kinda. Lots of room in there, the same as with just the barkbusters. I guess if you lost grip on the bars and pulled your hand out all the way they are more work to get your hands in as you have to stick them in the tube hole. If your worried if they would keep you attached to the bike, I’d doubt it very much. Since they are loose on your hands.
these were cheap which is why I got them, I even made cutouts for the mirrors. Heated grips would probably be nice but these were only like 20$

Kiwiscoot, my BMW R 80 G/S PD came with a pair of these fixed to a pair of the original Barkbusters. On fat bars on Rok risers.
They are a bit bigger than most, around 180 mm square for the guard part, so may work better for you
Good luck in finding someone who stocks them apart from the factory!
I went back to stock BMW bars and guards, 90 mm Rok risers, fat flat bars and oversized guards just didn't look right on a otherwise pretty stock looking G/S PD.
And it never gets that cold here in Adelaide.
Might even have the lot somewhere amidst boxes of bits hoarded over 50 odd years!

I found an unbranded set on Amazon. Identical to Cycra, $100 less.
bolted on just find, large handguard to block the wind, aluminum backbone to protect the levers.

I will be fitting genuine Cycra MultiPlo handguards to my new Himalayan...Have used them on previous bikes and consider them equivalent to genuine Barkbusteers....just not 100% sure how they will fit on the Himalayan..?CY7500-02.jpg
