desperately wanting conti 535 frame for project bike I am currently building. Not unregisterable . Clean frame. Found one on Hitchcocks site that was ridiculas price would have cost over agrand delivered

Only wrong price if you can find one cheaper!
If that is $A1000- delivered to Oz that is not bad at all unless they have found a very cheap way to ship them.
Late model straight frames are not always easy to find, as quite a few late model bikes are written off because of a bent frame, so there is always a steady demand for straight ones from folks trying to rebuild cheap insurance write offs!

Indeed..!!..I have a very cheaply bought write off Hima(as a spare. experimental source that I can quickly swop over pre-prepared altered bits with my everyday rider..all there bar upper frame/tank, couple of minor items) however....!!!!....the frame was 'destroyed' and threfore the registration has gone having only damage that in the old days could be easily and safely repaired....however in todays world(western) it's all throwaway...

Thats true. Bought a conti cheap and the only damage was cosmetic but expensive to replace and repair. Easier for the insurance company to walk away and pay up. A real pity as a lovely bike with 8k on the clock has to be junked. Does anyone know if we have a right to appeal the written off vehicle decision??????

At one time in this state it was possible to have a repaired bike inspected by a certified engineer , and then at the Transport department at Regency park, and the bike recertified.
But it was not a cheap process, even thirty years ago around $8/900-, and the guys qualified and equipped to work on frames wanted a similar amount.
Few will work on cradle frames like Hima one, or the BMW Funduro/ F650/ Pegaso etc.
Obvious when you see one stripped, the top tube which holds the steering head takes a twist and a bend and if you try and pull them back they either crack at the time or soon thereafter.
On some bikes the frame holds oil, so you get a warning that it is cracking, others not so much!

Actually spoke to a real nice copper about the insurance companys policy of too hard right it off. He said there should be a right to appeal the decision where the damage was cosmetic. I can understand the need for an engineering report if the frame is damaged in any way but a ding in the tank broken instrument cluster stuffed mirrors and seat and tail light plus a couple of scratches doesnt seem to fit the bill. Ill pursue the matter with the DMV and see how I go. Will keep you posted.

Yep, but who is going to certify that damage is only cosmetic? Probably the same guy who would inspect the repairs!
Good luck with the DMV, or whatever.
In some States they actually sell repairable write offs as well as unrepairable ones so perhaps the decision has already been made regarding the frame.

Repairable write of in S.A. means some ones keyed the tank. seriously saw a classic advertised with sidecar it had been backed into. Broken tail light and wobbly back wheel. Automatic write off

Had a nice Funduro frame here, all it needed was a few cracks welded up.
Was straightened by self styled BMW Guru Lee McPeake , but ended up in the skip of course,
Just have to find time to finish the rebuild with the replacement frame---- been there too!

I remember years ago eBay put a stop to selling frames with title. That is all a motorcycle thief needs to put a stolen bike back on the road.
