LED Indicator Upgrade Help?

timatn

Getting there...
Hello, all, I'm trying to upgrade the indicator bulbs on my '21 Meteor to LED, because I've about gotten run over more than once when trying to make turns. So need something brighter and more obvious!

The main thing I need help with is, replacing the stock 4-pin flasher relay. I don't want to cut up my wiring harness to add load resistors in order to address the hyper flash issue with LED bulbs.

Elsewhere on the forum, a '21 Himalayan owner with the same issue used a standard EP29 relay and rewired a new socket into his harness. The relay is easy to come by, anybody know what that socket/terminal part is called or where to get it?

Or have any luck doing something similar?

Thanks!

Welcome.
Where are you ? what country state city ?
Is 30087 a postal code?
Re your led flasher, ask the supplier of flasher if base is available. Most standard relays come with optional bases. Alternatively if the pins (are standard) you can just use standard crimped female spade connectors depending on size (wire crimp connector sizes are usually colour coded red, yellow or blue). My switched power with relay for electrical accessories have been connected this way on several bikes over the years. Hope this helps.

Yes, 30087 is a postal code, if you click it, it will take you to a map of the Atlanta, Georgia area in the United States where I am located.

According to a similar post in the Himalayan forum, looks like RE changed to a proprietary part for the flasher relay in 2021, at least for the US models. It uses a somewhat standard electrical 4-pin plug on a custom part, but not a standard automotive/motorcycle flasher relay connection now.

What you suggested is the route I'd already decided to go. I'm going to create a custom harness just to connect a EP29 LED relay flasher to the stock wiring harness. I've already sourced the parts on Amazon.com.

When I get the bike successfully converted to LED, I'm going to create a how-to video on YouTube. This has taken some figuring out, and I'm going to pass it on.

This is one of the frustrations of owning a non-standard motorcycle brand. If I had a Harley or anything from the Japanese big 4, there's at least two plug-n-play options per model for an electronic LED flasher relay out there.

I'm still confused about all of this stuff. Did you figure it out?
Yes, I figured it out, and as I said I will soon be making a YouTube video demonstrating the fix and how to do it yourself. At least for US models. Basically you have to adapt a 4-pin automotive LED relay with a 2.8mm electrical connector to hook it up with the stock wiring harness. Also, I'm only replacing the bulbs on mine, not the entire indicator, but you could do whatever you want after this fix. Both the front and rear stock indicators take common 1156 bulbs, BTW.

Did you make that video yet?! If not... I've heard long weekends are a great time to get fun projects done..... ;) ;) ;)

Ah crap, someone linked this thread in another thread. But mine's a himalayan. Looks like some of the writing is the same though? I have some led signals and stuff, what do you think would be the easiest way to test it out?

“Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans” – John Lennon. I'll make the video someday soon. In the meantime, you can wire your own? Get the bike wiring diagram out of the back of your Service Manual, match that up with the wiring diagram for an automotive EP29 relay, then wire it up with a 4-pin 2.8mm electrical connector.

If you look in the Himalayan forum, there's a thread already about converting to LED by modifying an automotive EP29 relay for the bike. This is where I learned what I need to do for my Meteor. The relays are probably the exact same part, but the wiring harnesses are different between the two bikes.

My 2021 Supernova is fully LED'd and all on the standard RE flasher unit, which around these parts is a 2 pin job.
RE seems to put a different relay part on with each different model and then they change that every other year, so there's quite a variety out there, just depends on your own bike. The newer Meteor's and Himalayan's have a custom 4-pin flasher relay. You can just drop LED bulbs into the signal housing of any bike, but if you have hyper flash, then you have a problem. If they're flashing like normal, then you're cool.

Might give this a try:

Cheap enough and probably works.
Thanks for the idea, but sorry that won't work. RE Meteor's and Himalayan's use a proprietary relay now with a 2.8mm 4-pin electrical connection. That's the problem, they used to use a standard 2 or 3-pin like most bikes use, but not anymore, and even that depends on which model and year you have for type used.
