Himalayan excessive tappet noise

Picked mine up today, new head. According to RE it was the valve alignment in the head. There is a tolerance problem whereby one valve is out of alignment and makes the tapping noise as it moves. They have had several like this. The dealers are annoyed as they are given 20 minutes to do the warranty work. Takes a lot longer.

20 minutes! Unbelievable!

20 minutes at the full technicians rate, they might suspect warranty work will probably be done by the ,er, floors weeper for a fraction of the cost.
They might also suspect most dealers will also find some non warranty work that they will charge the customer for while the bike is in their shop - DAHIK.

Well now.... I got this tick at the exhaust valve after first adjustment. Pretty sure I posted in the ADV thread about it. Maybe I'll take it to the dealer and hope it's a warranty issue.

@Jerk , what dealer has your bike? I'll be going to Triumph San Diego where I got it

Update: Stopped by my friendly dealer and was told they are waiting for an intake seal from RE. They told me the seal was worn because the valves were set way too loose (false). Its been in the shop a few months already, and I'm guessing it will be a further few months before I get it back.

So I've been experiencing this intermittently for the last 2000 or so miles on my 2019 (currently 12,000 on the odometer.)

With others that have had this occur (my valve tolerances are currently .08mm intake and .23 exhaust - dead on), is there anything in the nature of it that would make it occur in cooler weather? It seems like I only experience this in the cold and though there is seemingly no performance draw - the sound is loud enough that I'd call it alarming.

I recorded a video some time ago of it to send it off to an RE involved person but never did hear back on what they thought it might be.

Has anyone had it occur where it switches off as the bike warms up etc? I think I'm just gonna drop it off at A&S Cycles in Roseville to have them look it over. I just hate to be out of a bike for a prolonged period as I'm hosting a rally in July and have lots of ride scouting yet to do. D'oh!

It sounds like as soon as it gets fully oiled in the top end it quits? Hate to ask but what oil are you using? Cold engines have noisy valve trains when starting for a moment or two. Mine does too but quits much sooner than yours. My old R100GS sounds like a bucket of bolts being shaken around when it starts for the first 3 or 4 minutes, always has and it now has 150,000 miles on it.

Thanks for the response.

The change in sound largely due to the cell phone mic normalizing the sound as the decibels increase. As the revs ramp up it's just as loud (albeit the slapping occurs more rapidly) but is largely overpowered by the Termi slip-on. If I go and cold start it now and rev it, the issue won't occur but as the bike starts to warm up a bit, it'll rear up. It should be worth noting that this didn't start happening until about 2000 miles ago. The first 10,000 miles were fine and I live in the mountains where morning cold starts are often in the 30s and 40s for half of the year. Now it will occur intermittently if I'm riding the bike in 50 degree weather including when the bike has been running non-stop for over an hour.

Engine oil isn't a concern but just to provide the info, I use MA2 Motul 5100 15w-50 which fits the OE requirement exactly.

I'm just a bit perplexed as it only seems to occur when the ambient air temperature is below 60f

One of my Himmas has developed a fairly loud tappet ticking sound at about 5,000 miles. I've double checked the valve clearance and everything is good. Oil level is good and has not changed recently.

Anyone else have this? Normal?

On another website there was a thread people complaining about the same thing and a couple of the guys brought up the motor oil. Just a thought, the heat could be breaking down the oil. I'm using Castrol 10w50... And please I do not want to start an oil thread it always leads to war
